Faculty of Law held the All-Russian round table on the topic: “Nontraditional religiosity as a form of social activity in the postmodern era”

On 20 November 2020 the Faculty of Law held the All-Russian round table on the topic: “Nontraditional religiosity as a form of social activity in the postmodern era”, organized in the framework of the scientific research group of the Department of Theory and History of Law and State under the leadership of  Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Lubava Romanovskaya (the study is conducted under financial support of Russian Foundation for Basic Research and Expert Institute for Social Research, project No. 20-011-31235).

The round table was interdisciplinary and brought together representatives of various scientific specialties (lawyers, philosophers, religious scholars, teachers, historians, etc.), as well as traditional and non-traditional religions. There were discussed some topical issues like, for instance, creation and activity of religious groups, features of postmodern culture in traditional and non-traditional religiosity, the essence of parodic and other postmodern religions, the reasons for the emergence of new religious movements. The article considers the features of broadcasting the image of traditional and new religious movements in the film industry, in the agenda of professional and social journalism, historical aspects of the formation of new religious movements, etc.

The round table was opened by Viktor Tsyganov, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Lobachevsky University, Candidate of law, Associate Professor, with a report on the topic “Problems of creation and activity of religious groups”.

Approaches to understanding the essence of new religious movements were reflected in the reports of Associate Professor of the Department of General history, sociology and political science of Omsk State Pedagogical University, Associate Professor of the Department of theology, philosophy and world cultures of Omsk State University in honor of F.M. Diostoevsky, leading expert Of the center for Humanities, socio-economic and political research-2, Candidate of History, Associate Professor Vladimir Yashin (“New religious movements: a concept with an elusive meaning”), Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and History of Law and State of the Faculty of Law of the Lobachevsky University, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Pavel Zhdanov (“Postmodernism in its relation to the culture of the New time”), State of the Faculty of Law of the Lobachevsky University, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Yana Beznosova (“Causes and prerequisites for the emergence of new religious movements (historical aspect)”). Aspects of the representation of religion in cinema were reflected in the report of the senior teacher of the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary, Master of Theology, Master of Pedagogy Yuri Gutorov (“Religion and the film industry: from the origins to new religious movements”).

The features of certain new religious movements were analyzed in the reports of the Associate Professor of the Department of Constitutional and Municipal Law of the Faculty of Law of Lobachevsky University, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Lubava Romanovskaya (“Parody religions as a postmodern phenomenon”), Associate Professor of the Department of Religious Studies and Theology of the Banzarov Buryat State University, Candidate of History, Svetlana Akhmadulina (“New religious movements in the Republic of Buryatia (on the example of the Kazakh organization Elle Ayat)”), Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and History of Law and State of the Faculty of Law of the Lobachevsky University, Doctor of Law, Associate Professor Tatyana Mineeva (“Neopagan cults as a form of social activity of population of Russia and Northern Europe”),

Head of the Religious group Commonwealth Nizhny Novgorod Russian-Slavic traditional folk belief “Quiet beach” Dmitry Nikolaev (“Russian-Slavic faith: the question of a national religion”), Research Assistant of the Department of Theory and History of Law and State of the Faculty of Law of the Lobachevsky University Catherine Esaeva (“the Caodaism as a new religious movement: historical aspects”).

Professor of the Department of social and humanitarian disciplines of the State University of Land Management, Professor, Doctor of Pedagogy Tatyana Safonova was devoted to the issues of teaching religion in higher education.

Summing up the results of the round table, Deputy Dean for research of The Faculty of Law, Candidate of Law Arina Fedyushkina presented an overview of statistical data on the assessment of various aspects of the activities of new religious movements by students of the Lobachevsky University.
